AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchange Firms to Withdraw Registrations
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has launched a new campaign urging inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms to either resume trading or withdraw their registrations to avoid having them canceled. This initiative, dubbed “Use it or Lose it,” also extends to crypto ATM providers, as announced by AUSTRAC.
Identification of Inactive DCEs by AUSTRAC
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, with not all of them actively operating. AUSTRAC has raised concerns about the number of inactive firms in the sector, citing the high-risk nature of the industry. By canceling the registrations of inactive firms, AUSTRAC aims to strengthen security measures and prevent misuse of currency exchange services.
The center also stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity and accuracy of its register by weeding out inactive and potentially risky entities. Inactive firms are encouraged to proactively cancel their registrations to avoid any consequences.
Creation of Publicly Searchable DCE Register
In addition to addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly searchable DCE register to allow citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers. This measure aims to increase transparency and regulatory oversight in the industry.
