Poll Shows Strong Public Support for Casino Smoking Ban in Atlantic City
A recent poll conducted across South Jersey counties has revealed overwhelming public support for a ban on smoking inside Atlantic City casinos. According to the survey, 83% of respondents are in favor of a complete indoor smoking ban. Additionally, nearly four in five voters expressed that they would visit casinos more frequently if smoking indoors was prohibited.
Advocates Call for Action to Protect Casino Workers
The poll was commissioned by public health groups such as Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. These organizations emphasize that voters are more likely to support political candidates who endorse the smoking ban, with a more favorable view towards Governor Phil Murphy if he signs related laws.
Casino workers, represented by the Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE), have been advocating for a change in policy. Pete Naccarelli, a founding member of CEASE, stressed the importance of prioritizing the health and safety of thousands of casino employees. Many workers have reportedly fallen ill due to prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke in the workplace.
Legislative Stalemate on Casino Smoking Ban
Although there is bipartisan support for a smoking ban in casinos, the state Legislature has yet to advance any legislation on the matter. Governor Murphy has expressed willingness to sign a bill that would prohibit indoor smoking in casinos, but progress has been slow. The Casino Association of New Jersey and Local 54 of Unite Here continue to oppose the ban, citing concerns about potential job losses and decreased revenue.
Supporters of the smoking ban reference a 2022 study by C3 Gaming, which showed that casinos in other states that went smoke-free during the COVID-19 pandemic did not experience a decline in business compared to their smoking-permitted counterparts.
Public Health Advocates Push for Change Ahead of Elections
As the state elections approach, public health groups are urging candidates to prioritize the casino smoking ban issue. Cynthia Hallett, the executive director of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, believes that endorsing the ban could be a strategic move for politicians, given the high level of public support for the measure. Hallett warns that failure to act on this issue could result in another political figure taking credit for safeguarding the health of casino workers.
